Appeal on Behalf of A. Rahman

General Abizaid:

The religious and human rights community are greatly alarmed by the trial and threatened execution of Abdur Rahman, an Afghan citizen arrested last month and charged with apostasy. The case reveals serious defects in the judiciary of the reconstructed Afghanistan government that threatens the new-found freedoms of Afghani citizens and the support of the American people.

The U.S. government has much invested in seeing that democratic institutions that promote universal human rights develop successfully in Afghanistan. The president of the United States should do all in his power to encourage the Afghan government to dismiss the charges against Mr. Rahman and to promote religious freedom and universal human rights at every level of Afghan society.

We are writing to you on humanitarian grounds as the commander of the theater of operations for US and Coalition forces in Afghanistan. We request that you direct a military Christian chaplain to visit Mr. Rahman in the Kabul prison where he is presently incarcerated and to report back to you concerning his treatment, nourishment, and access to spiritual and legal counsel. Please insure that Mr. Rahman and other Christian prisoners are provided with a Bible, cross, and are afforded the opportunity to worship on Sundays during incarceration. If there are any irregularities in regards to the provision of basic humanitarian and spiritual needs, we respectfully ask you to direct this to the attention of the President of the United States so that he may intercede with President Karzai.

While we are hopeful that there will be a successful political resolution to this incident, we are concerned that in the duration of that process Mr. Rahman and other Christian prisoners be afforded humane treatment and security. Your positive response to this request will help to insure that indeed is the case.

There are thousands of former Muslims around the world who have converted to Christianity or otherwise denied Islam. Islam makes it a duty for Muslims to kill these apostates. Therefore, any practicing Muslim must have intent to kill, or intent to support fellow Muslim killers.

Both intent to kill and abetting murder are crimes. Therefore all practicing Muslims can be considered suspected criminals.

Hello Bad Zhummi,

Though you may have experienced bad things with Muslims, I don't think it is fair to indict an entire relgion -- one of the largest in the world. The hatred mostly comes from the Hadith. There are a growing number of Koranic Muslims who have disavowed the Hadith and seek to follow the peaceful scriptures of the Koran.

It is also important to understand the cultural dynamics of Islam in certain communities. Concepts are taught and instilled at a young age, which these children hold as true later on in life. Certainly there are things in the Coptic culture that are taught and maintained by its members.

While many people outside of the Coptic culture may not agree with the traditions and mores taught within the culture, Copts are not taught to kill or hate others -- as far as I know. But the cultural concepts are strong with many Copts. It is a hard thing to break away from. So you can imagine how hard this would be for Muslim as well.

What is needed in Islam is a reformation, not destruction. The reformation happens when Muslims of different cultures open up to different ideas and are able to examine their own culture in a more objective way. That is hard to do, as the gatekeepers of most groups try to preserve the culture.

I know of many people who want to destroy Islam. I don't think that is very practical. I think a reformation is more practical. A reformation from within will help to stave the violence and human rights abuses without.

I just heard that the Afghan Christian convert was freed. Let's hope he isn't killed by his family or others.

On another note, I was wondering if you could consider posting either one of the following articles that came out recently and have to do with women. So little is said about women and yet huge numbers of women suffer tremendously. There are some progressive Copts, as well as activists like Saad Ibrahim, who are very concerned about women's issues. I believe they will be interested in this. It will be great when women are respected as equals and not victimized. Thanks, Maria

KHANPUR, Pakistan

Aisha Parveen doesn't matter. She's simply one more
impoverished girl from the countryside, and if her brothel's
owner goes ahead and kills her, almost no one will care.

Ms. Parveen, an outspoken 20-year-old woman with flashing
eyes, is steeling herself for a state-administered horror.
Just two months after she escaped from the brothel in which
she was tortured and imprisoned for six years, the courts are
poised to hand her back to the brothel owner.

Sex trafficking, nurtured by globalization and increased
mobility, is becoming worse. The U.N. estimates that one
million children are held in conditions of slavery in Asia
alone. Yet it never gets much attention, because the victims
tend to be the least powerful people in these societies: poor
and uneducated rural girls.

Ms. Parveen was a 14-year-old Pashtun living in the northwest
of Pakistan when she was hit on the head while walking to
school. She says she awoke to find herself imprisoned in a
brothel hundreds of miles away, in this remote southeastern
Pakistani town of Khanpur.

A person of unbelievable strength, Ms. Parveen fought back and
refused to sleep with customers. So, she says, the brothel
owner Mian Sher, the violent sadist who had kidnapped her
beat and sexually tortured her, and regularly drugged her so
that she would fall unconscious and customers could do with
her as they liked.

This went on for six years, during which she says she was
beaten every day. The girls in the brothel were forced to
sleep naked at night, so that they would be too embarrassed to
try to escape. Ms. Parveen says she believes that two of them,
Malo Jan and Suwa Tai, were killed after they repeatedly
refused to sleep with customers. In any case condoms were
never available, so all the girls may eventually die of AIDS.

I wanted to look into the eyes of a man who could do these
things. So I barged into Mian Sher's brothel, identified
myself and interviewed him.

He warily offered me tea, pleasantries and flashes of violent
temper. He denied kidnapping Ms. Parveen, saying that he had
married her six years earlier. He also denied that he pimped
the girls a claim undermined by a customer who was walking
out of his brothel as I arrived. Others working in the area
said that Mian Sher unquestionably ran a brothel, and that Ms.
Parveen had been imprisoned in it.

In January, Ms. Parveen got a break. A metalworker, Mohamed
Akram, had been doing work in the brothel, and he pitied her.
"She laid her scarf down on my feet and begged me, in the name
of the Holy Koran, to rescue her," he remembers, and soon he
felt not only pity but also love.

So on Jan. 5, Ms. Parveen stealthily arose in the middle of
the night, crept past Mian Sher and padlocked the door with
him inside. Then she ran to a car that Mr. Akram had sent. The
next day, they were married.

Then the judicial nightmare began. Mian Sher brought charges
against the couple, claiming that Ms. Parveen is his wife and
must return to him.

"The police have taken money from him," Ms. Parveen said.
"They say, 'You're married to him, so you should go back to
him.' Well, I would rather die than go back to the brothel."

The police are now prosecuting Ms. Parveen for adultery. She
is free on bail, but thugs have attacked her home and tried to
kidnap her.

Mian Sher told me his plan: if Ms. Parveen is jailed for
adultery, then as her supposed husband he will bail her out
and take her away. Ms. Parveen says she believes he will then
rape and torture her, and finally kill her.

So the judicial system, while ignoring the sex trafficking of
children, may now, in the name of morality, hand a young woman
over to a brothel owner to do with her as he wants.

The new abolitionism, against sex trafficking, is being pushed
in America by an unlikely coalition of religious conservatives
and liberal feminists; leaders include the Coalition Against
Trafficking in Women, Ecpat, Equality Now and International
Justice Mission. But progress is slow because the victims tend
to be voiceless young people like Ms. Parveen.

Whether Ms. Parveen is returned to her brothel owner and
killed may be, in terms of global issues, a small matter. But
after spending a couple of days with this smart and lovely
young woman, after seeing her in moments of giddy laughter and
terrified weeping, I can't help thinking that slavery should
be just as outrageous in the 21st century as it was in the
19th.

A court hearing to decide Ms. Parveen's fate is scheduled for
tomorrow here in Khanpur. I'll let you know what happens.

Actually, there is a lot of confusion about this issue of apostasy. The Noble Qur'an does not prescribe death penalty for deserters of Islam, but rather states that they would be in Hell in the hereafter (2:217).

Here is a verse that directly refers to people who abandon their faith after accepting it. It says what means:

*{But those who reject faith after they accepted it, and then go on adding to their defiance of faith never will their repentance be accepted; for they are those who have [of set purpose] gone astray.}* (Aal-`Imran 3:90)

As you can see, there is no mention here of the death penalty for the deserters.

But there are Muslim scholars of respected opinions who believe in the death penalty for apostates because of hadiths that mention it. If we study the context of these hadiths, we can see that the ruling was with reference to certain specific cases of miscreants who wished to undermine Islam, by joining Islam first and then deserting it. This is mentioned in the following verse that says what means:

*{A section of the People of the Book [Jews and Christians] say: "Believe in the morning what is revealed to the believers [Muslims], but reject it at the end of the day; perchance they may [themselves] turn back [from Islam]."}* (Aal `Imran 3:72)

In order to protect Islam from such malicious attempts to subvert it, the Prophet ordered the death penalty for such people. This indeed was a drastic step adopted by the Prophet to ensure the solidarity of the nascent Muslim community in those days. If it had been a general ruling applicable for all occasions, this would have been stated in the Qur'an because it is a life-and-death question that affects the very fabric of Islam most seriously. On the other hand, read the verse that says what means:

*{Again and again will those who disbelieve, wish that they had bowed [to God's will] in Islam. Leave them alone to enjoy [the good things of this life] and to please themselves: let [false] hope amuse them: soon will knowledge [undeceive them].}* (Al-Hijr 15:2-3)

This verse clearly indicates that the disbelievers should be left alone. Moreover, the killing of apostates would undermine the freedom of will Allah has bestowed on each human, as is made clear in the verses that say what means:

*{If it had been thy Lord's will, they would all have believed, all who are on earth! Wilt thou then compel mankind, against their will, to believe! No soul can believe, except by the will of God, and He will place doubt (or obscurity) on those who will not understand.}* (Yunus 10:99-100)

*{Say, "The truth is from your Lord": Let him who will believe, and let him who will, reject [it]: for the wrong doers We have prepared a Fire whose (smoke and flames), like the walls and roof of a tent, will hem them in: if they implore relief they will be granted water like melted brass, that will scald their faces, how dreadful the drink! How uncomfortable a dwelling (resting place)!"}* (Al-Kahf 18:29)

*{Let there be no compulsion in religion: truth stands out clear from error: whoever rejects evil and believes in Allah hath grasped the most trustworthy handhold that never breaks. And Allah heareth and knoweth all things.}* (Al-Baqarah 2:256)

The verses quoted above are categorical that complete freedom of will is a condition for sincere and wholehearted submission to Allah Almighty, and no force should be used in this regard. This is because coercion does not go along with freedom of choice.

In addition, we may consider another verse, too, which says what means:

*{Those who believe, then reject faith, then believe [again] and [again] reject faith, and go on increasing in unbelief, — Allah will not forgive them nor guide them on the way.}* (An-Nisaa' 4:137)

The example of a person who vacillates between Islam and disbelief is cited here. Note the expression: *{believe, then reject faith, then believe [again] and [again] reject faith}*.

How can we imagine a person becoming a Muslim a second time, after rejecting faith once, IF he is to be killed after his rejection? The significance of this verse is one of free choice; though one is expected to be responsible in the use of that choice.

Thus we see that the general teaching of the Qur'an is one of freedom of choice and mercy. And if we are to adopt the death penalty for apostates today, the first problem is the absence of a true Islamic system (even in the so-called Islamic countries) to judge apostasy and to enforce the punishment where it is due. Second, there are scholars of respected opinions who doubt whether death is the due punishment now. Third, we need to question the emphasis on punishments rather than on peaceful and diplomatic means of promoting the Islamic ideal. Which is prior to what, in which case, should be judged only by true correct and wise Muslim scholars.

THE PUNISHMENT FOR APOSTASY FROM ISLAM

To begin with, the Quran does not come out and explicitly state that apostates should be murdered. However, there are a number of Quranic verses that pertain to apostasy, and they shed some light on the punishment for apostates.





Starting with the Quran.



Sura 9:73,74 -



"Prophet, make war on the unbelievers and the hypocrites and deal rigorously with them. Hell shall be their home: an evil fire. They swear by God that they said nothing. Yet they uttered the word of unbelief and renounced Islam after embracing it. They sought to do what they could not attain. Yet they had no reason to be spiteful except perhaps because God and His apostle had enriched them through His bounty. If they repent, it will indeed be better for them, but if they give no heed, God will sternly punish them, both in this world and in the world to come. They shall have none on this earth to protect or help them." [Dawood]



We see here that Allah urges Muhammad to "make war" on the people who have left Islam. It also states that "Allah will punish them in this world, and in the world to come".



What exactly Muhammad was to do to the people in his "making war" on them is not explicitly stated, but it can be surmised that they will be physically punished, if not outright killed. Further, Allah Himself is also going to punish those who leave Islam. What is His punishment? Whatever it is, is will be unpleasant.





Sura 47:23-28 -



"If you renounced the faith, you would surely do evil in the land, and violate the ties of blood. Such are those on whom God has laid His curse, leaving them deaf and sightless.... Those who return to unbelief after God's guidance has been revealed to them are seduced by Satan and inspired by him....





Again, God is punishing people, in this world, but the totality of punishment isn't detailed... other than becoming "deaf and sightless". No doubt this is spiritual blindness, because millions have left Islam and have never become physically blind. Note also Muhammad’s fear and hatred of and toward those that have left Islam – he claims that they will “do evil in the land and violate the ties of blood.” Perhaps his mistake assumption is his justification for ordering the killing of apostates.





Additionally one could review Sura 3:86-91 and Sura 16:106. These verses clearly state that apostates will be punished in hellfire. However, though it is implied, the punishment meted out while they live is unclear. Sura 4:137, similarly shows that God will not forgive the apostates, but no mention of a earthly punishment is made.



Finally, brief mention is made of apostates in 3:72, 5:54, 9:107 but none of these shed any penetrating light on the subject.

Arabic "irtidad". Traditional Islamic law prescribes the penalty of death for a Muslim who commits apostasy. The punishment is not stated in the Quran, but is said to be based on certain Hadith. The advocates and the opponents of the said penalty have, in their attempt to find Quranic support for their views, appealed to certain Quranic verses, but the fact is that none of the arguments offered do full justice to the Quranic context......"

THE TEACHINGS OF THE HADITH ON APOSTASY



It is from the Hadith that we draw our understanding and information on the punishment for the apostate. From the Hadith, we find no ambiguity on the subject. All quotes will be from Bukhari's Hadith, from the 9 volume English set, translated by Dr. Muhammad Muhsin Khan.







Bukhari, volume 9, #17



"Narrated Abdullah: Allah's Messenger said, "The blood of a Muslim who confesses that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah and that I am His Messenger, cannot be shed except in three cases: in Qisas (equality in punishment) for murder, a married person who commits illegal sexual intercourse and the one who reverts from Islam (Apostate) and leaves the Muslims."





Bukhari, volume 9, #37



"Narrated Abu Qilaba: Once Umar bin Abdul Aziz sat on his throne in the courtyard of his house so that the people might gather before him....He replied "By Allah, Allah's messenger never killed anyone except in one of the following three situations: 1) A person who killed somebody unjustly, was killed (in Qisas,) 2) a married person who committed illegal sexual intercourse and, 3) a man who fought against Allah and His messenger, and deserted Islam and became an apostate....







In Chapter 2, from "The Book of obliging the Reverters from Islam, page 42, (following Hadith #56) it reads:



"The legal regulation concerning the male and the female who reverts from Islam (apostates). Ibn Umar Az-Zuhri and Ibrahim said, "A female apostate (who reverts from Islam), should be killed. And the obliging of the reverts from Islam to repent Allah said - ....



Following this chapter, a number of Quranic verses are given, among them are some already mentioned. They are 3:86-89, 3:100, 4:137, 5:54, 16:106-110, 2:217.







Bukhari, volume 9, #57



Narrated Ikrima, "Some atheists were brought to Ali and he burnt them. The news of this event, reached Ibn Abbas who said, "If I had been in his place, I would not have burnt them, as Allah's messenger forbade it, saying, "Do not punish anybody with Allah's punishment (fire)." I would have killed them according to the statement of Allah's Messenger, "Whoever changed his Islamic religion, then kill him."





Bukhari, volume 9, #58



Narrated Abu Bruda, "Abu Musa said.....Behold there was a fettered man beside Abu Musa. Muadh asked, "Who is this (man)?" Abu Musa said, "He was a Jew and became a Muslim and hen reverted back to Judaism." Then Abu Musa requested Muadh to sit down but Muadh said, "I will not sit down till he has been killed. This is the judgment of Allah and his messenger," and repeated it thrice. Then Abu Musa ordered that the man be killed, and he was killed. Abu Musa added, "Then we discussed the night prayers .....





Bukhari, volume 9, #64



Narrated Ali, "Whenever I tell you a narration from Allah's messenger, by Allah, I would rather fall down from the sky, than ascribe a false statement to him, but if I tell you something between me and you, (not a Hadith), then it was indeed a trick (i.e., I may say things just to cheat my enemy). No doubt I heard Allah's messenger saying, ‘During the last days there will appear some young foolish people, who will say the best words, but their faith will not go beyond their throats (i.e. they will have no faith) and will go out from (leave) their religion as an arrow goes out of the game. So, wherever you find them, kill them, for whoever kills them shall have reward on the Day of Resurrection.’"





Bukhari, volume 9, #271 [This one is similar to #58]



Narrated Abu Musa: A man embraced Islam and then reverted back to Judaism. Muadh Jabal came and saw the man with Abu Musa. Muadh asked, "What is wrong with this (man)?" Abu Musa replied, "He embraced Islam, and then reverted back to Judaism." Muadh said, "I will not sit down unless you kill him (as it is) the verdict of Allah and His messenger."

"The Statement of Allah... 42:32, 3:159, ...The prophet said, "If someone changes his religion, then kill them....."

OTHER REFERENCES





FROM THE SIRAT RASULALLAH AND THE KITAB AL-TABAQAT AL-KABIR





After Muhammad took Mecca, he ordered a number of people to be killed. Several of them were apostates. Here is the background.





Muhammad ordered the execution of 10 people when he took Mecca. Here is the list of names found in Ibn Sa'd "Tabaqat".



The quote is from the Tabaqat, Vol. 2, page 168.



"The apostle of Allah entered through Adhakhir, [into Mecca], and prohibited fighting. He ordered six men and four women to be killed, they were (1) Ikrimah Ibn Abi Jahl, (2) Habbar Ibn al-Aswad, (3) Abd Allah Ibn Sa'd Ibn Abi Sarh, (4) Miqyas Ibn Sababah al-Laythi, (5) al-Huwayrith Ibn Nuqaydh, (6) Abd Abbah Ibn Hilal Ibn Khatal al-Adrami, (7) Hind Bint Utbah, (8) Sarah, the mawlat (enfranchised girl) of Amr Ibn Hashim, (9) Fartana and (10) Qaribah.





THE SIRAT RASULALLAH GIVES SOME DETAILS BEHIND THE LIST OF NAMES





The information below corresponds to # 3 on the list.



"The apostle had instructed his commanders when they entered Mecca only to fight those who resisted them, except a small number who were to be killed even if they were found beneath the curtains of the Kaba. Among them was Abdullah Sa'd, brother of the B. Amir Luayy. The reason he ordered him to be killed was that he had been a Muslim and used to write down revelation; then he apostatized and returned to Quraysh [Mecca] and fled to Uthman Affan whose foster brother he was. The latter hid him until he brought him to the apostle after the situation in Mecca was tranquil, and asked that he might be granted immunity. They allege that the apostle remained silent for a long time till finally he [Muhammad] said yes [granting Abdullah immunity from the execution order].

ANALYSIS



We find that although a severe physical punishment is mentioned in the Quran, we are not told what that punishment is. However, we find in Bukhari's Hadith, that the punishment is death. There is no ambiguity about this. Muhammad clearly taught that apostates are to be put to death.



Further, we find in contrast to what many Muslim apologists assert, that these apostates are to be killed wherever they are as per Bukhari, vol. 9, #64.



"So, wherever you find them, kill them, for whoever kills them shall have reward on the Day of Resurrection."



We see from this that Muslims are instructed to kill apostates. Further, those who commit the murder, will get a reward in heaven.







Tying into this, we find from both Ibn Sa'd and Ibn Hisham, that those who had apostatized prior to the incorporation of an Islamic state in Mecca, were ordered to be executed. These people were Muslims living in Medina, and later left Islam. When Muhammad was able to order their deaths, he did so. These people would correspond to Muslims living in the West, who left Islam. Following the Sunnah, these Muslims are already under a death sentence. It would not be against Islamic law for Muslims to murder these ex-Muslims. If anything, they would have a reward waiting for them in heaven.

DISCUSSION



I am reminded of Jesus words, "In fact a time is coming when anyone who kills you will think he is offering a service to God"... John 16:2.



Indeed, many Muslims who have converted to Christianity have paid the price with their very lives.





When I lived in a Muslim country, I spoke with a number of Muslims about the punishment for apostates. Several educated Muslims told me that there were Muslim death squads operating in Europe, and that they were trying to form similar death squads in the USA. One of their purposes was to murder those who left Islam. While Muslims in the West would be quick to deny that, or denounce that, Muslims living in the Mideast support it. When I asked my Muslim friends in the Mideast if they supported those death squads, they all said yes.





This aspect of Islam portrays one of its most ugly sides - i.e. the murder of those who think for themselves. Look today at the Islamic world, we see it backwards, regressive, and primitive. The poor people who have grown up into Islam, who have had to adopt this dark system, are kept in bondage. It is no wonder that their countries continue to regress since freedom of thought, freedom of creativity, freedom of expression is stifled. We see the Muslim states falling further behind the rest of the world in areas like education, science, and the arts. The more Islamic a state becomes, the farther it regresses.

QUESTION



1) What is to be made of a religion that forbids a man to think and choose for himself? In effect, Islam is a type of religious slavery. "Leave Islam, and you die".



2) How does this mental bondage affect society, and its ability to provide for its people?



3) Leaving Islam doesn't necessarily mean a person is now at war with his people. Isn't it possible for a person who is born a Muslim to serve his country, and do no harm to its people?

CONCLUSION



Muhammad taught that apostates are to be murdered, wherever they are. This death sentence can be carried out wherever these Muslims are found, either in a Muslim country, or in a non-Muslim country. The Quran supports this notion, and both the Hadith and Sirat establish this portion of Islamic law.

Islam was and still is the religion that never put hindrances in the face of the people of knowledge, whether they were students or scholars. Rather, Islam encourages research and investigation. The Qur'an is full of so many verses calling upon people to make up their minds and explore the universe and its beauties.

Islam never said that people should stop asking questions or avoid research. It always says that people should use their minds to realize the existence of God. People are to use the faculties given to them by Allah to think and contemplate upon the heavens and the earth, the remains of the previous nations, the creation around them and see how beautiful all creation is. This is also to realize how great are the favors of Allah and to know that He is the sole Creator of the whole universe.

Islam never says: “no” to “whys”. It rather teaches us to ask and never leave our minds idle and lazy. It blames those who never use their intellects or those who are silent. Almighty Allah says in the Qur’an what means:



*{Already have We urged unto hell many of the jinn and humankind, having hearts wherewith they understand not, and having eyes wherewith they see not, and having ears wherewith they hear not. These are as the cattle nay, but they are worse! These are the neglectful.}*(Al-A`raf 7:179)



In so many other verses of the Qur'an people are encouraged to ask the people of knowledge. Almighty Allah says what means:



*{…Ask the followers of the remembrance if ye know not!}*(An-Nahl 16:43)



The Qur’an also reads what means:



*{Lo! in the creation of the heavens and the earth, and the difference of night and day, and the ships which run upon the sea with that which is of use to men, and the water which Allah sendeth down from the sky, thereby reviving the earth after its death, and dispersing all kinds of beasts therein, and [in] the ordinance of the winds, and the clouds obedient between heaven and earth: are signs [of Allah's sovereignty] for people who have sense.}* (Al-Baqarah 2:164)



In another verse the Qur’an also reads what means:



*{The similitude of the life of the world is only as water which We send down from the sky, then the earth's growth of that which men and cattle eat mingleth with it till, when the earth hath taken on its ornaments and is embellished, and its people deem that they are masters of it, Our commandment cometh by night or by day and we make it as reaped corn as if it had not flourished yesterday. Thus do We expound the revelations for people who reflect. }*(Yunus 10:24)



The Qur'an tells us about a very interesting story about the Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) who questioned for an eye witness of the process of quickening the dead. Almighty Allah never punished him for such a request. The Qur’an narrates the story in what means:



*{And when Abraham said [unto his Lord]: “My Lord! Show me how Thou givest life to the dead.” He said: “Dost thou not believe?” Abraham said: “Yea, but [I ask] in order that my heart may be at ease.” [His Lord] said: “Take four of the birds and cause them to incline unto thee, then place a part of them on each hill, then call them, they will come to thee in haste. And know that Allah is Mighty, Wise.” }*(Al-Baqarah 2:260)



However, the Qur'an also teaches us that we, being humans, have limited perceptions. We do not have explanation for everything. Thus, we need to turn to Allah for guidance and turn to the learned people who have better knowledge to give us explanation. This knowledge, which we and they have, is still nothing compared to the infinite knowledge of Allah. Thus, all of us should turn to Him with our questions and attribute any scientific discovery to His grace, because it is Him Who blessed us with this intellect.

We have never heard in the history of Islam of any inquisition held for the scholars or scientists. On the contrary, the scholars and inventors were given great respect under the rule of Islam and were placed in high position. We have never heard of someone like Galileo being subject to inquisition because of his discoveries or scientific views. Islam was always for knowledge, reflection and asking more questions so long as these whys are for the purpose of gaining knowledge, getting closer to the truth and the Absolute Truth, Almighty Allah. May Allah grant us knowledge and bring us all closer to Him.

Quantitative and qualitative choice-making thus lends
itself as the superior basis of an active intelligence.

Human is earth's Choicemaker. His title describes
his definitive and typifying characteristic. Recall
that his other features are but vehicles of experi-
ence intent on the development of perceptive
awareness and the following acts of decision and
choice. Note that the products of man cannot define
him for they are the fruit of the discerning choice-
making process and include the cognition of self,
the utility of experience, the development of value-
measuring systems and language, and the accultur-
ation of civilization.

The arts and the sciences of man, as with his habits,
customs, and traditions, are the creative harvest of
his perceptive and selective powers. Creativity, the
creative process, is a choice-making process. His
articles, constructs, and commodities, however
marvelous to behold, deserve neither awe nor idol-
atry, for man, not his contrivance, is earth's own
highest expression of the creative process.

Human is earth's Choicemaker. The sublime and
significant act of choosing is, itself, the Archimedean
fulcrum upon which man levers and redirects the
forces of cause and effect to an elected level of qual-
ity and diversity. Further, it orients him toward a
natural environmental opportunity, freedom, and
bestows earth's title, The Choicemaker, on his
singular and plural brow.

Human is earth's Choicemaker. Psalm 25:12 He is by
nature and nature's God a creature of Choice - and of
Criteria. Psalm 119:30,173 His unique and definitive
characteristic is, and of Right ought to be, the natural
foundation of his environments, institutions, and re-
spectful relations to his fellow-man. Thus, he is orien-
ted to a Freedom whose roots are in the Order of the
universe.

Let us proclaim it. Behold!

فيالَها مِنْ خُزَعْبَلاتٍ يَنْدَى لَهَا جَبْينُ السَامِعِين والـــــــــــــــــــــــــــــرُوَاة

فهيَا بنا إذَنْ نبْحَثُ عن فَرْجِ آمْنةٍ لنَنَعَمَ بنورهِ وضِيــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــاه

لنُعِيدَ أمْجَادَ النُبوّةِ ونُصَدِرُ للعَالَمِِ طَاقَتَهُ وكَهْرْبَـــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــاه



وفى غَارِ حِرَاءِ تَقَمَصَهُ إبْليسٌ وإبْتَــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــلاه

فأرْغَىَ وأزْبَدَ وعلى الأرضِ تَمَرَغَ فى قِيئِه وماخَرَجَ من أمْعَــــــــــــــــــَاه

ثم هَرْوَلَ إلى دارِهِ صَارِخاً فَزِعَاً واخديجتـــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــاه!

فأجلستهُ على حِجْرِها عساها تُطيبُ رُجْفَـــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــاه

وأعْلَمَهَا أنَ كائناً قدْ ظَهَرَ لهُ لا يَعْرِفُ كُنْهَـــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــاه

فزَمَلتهُ إلى صَدرِهَا وبخِمَارِها دَثَرَتْه ُ وسَدْتْ أُذُنـــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــاه

كَاشِفَةٌ عن فَخْذيْهَا يُسْرى ويُمنى وسَائلةَ أتــَــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــراه؟

ومُهَدِأةٌ مِنْ رَوْعِهِ وللعَفريتِ قائلةً إبْتَعدْ عنْ مُحَمْــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــدَاه

فإخْتَفَىَ المَخلوقُ مِن فورهِ رُبما مِن خَجَلِهِ وحَيـَــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــاه

فلولاها ما ثَبَتَتْ نُبوءةَ الكذابِ وما كان لدعوتِهِ حَيـَـــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــاة

وما شَاهَدَهُ أحْدَاً ومَا صَدْقَ أمْرؤٌ على رُؤيــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــاه



و القسُ إبن نَوفلْ عَلَمَهُ الكتابَ آملاً أن يجعلَ منهُ إنساناً يُبـــــــــــــــــــاه

فيجْعلهُ خَليفتهُ فى نشرِ هرطقتهِ ضِدَ المَسيحِ الإلــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــه

وللعَرَبِ يكونُ وكيلهُ فى نَشْرِ دَعـْــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــواه

وبتَعَاليمٍ وآياتٍ فى السِرِ أَمَدَهُ ورَبْــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــاه

فلما مَات وَرَقَةُ وفى القبْرِ وُضِعَ وفى الجحيمِ مَثـْـــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــواه

فَتْرَ الوَحْىُ عن الكذَابِ والمدعو جِبريلٌ ماعادَ يـَــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــراه

فسَارَ إلى شَواهِقِِ الجِبَالِ ليَنْتحرْ ويقضى نُحْبـَـــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــاه

ثمَ تراجعَ زاعماً أنَ جبريلٌ عادَ إليهِ وإرْتَضَـــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــاه

فياليته نفذ تَهديدهُ لإرتاحتْ البشريةُ مِنْ بـَـــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــلْواه


نبىٌُ كانَ الضلالُ والخديعةُ لهُ عِبادةٌ وصَـــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــلاه

وَصَايا الإلهُ العشرِ كَسَرَهَا والمضلُ فَرَضَ شُرْعَـــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــاه

قاتلٌُ سَارقٌٌٌ حَالِفُ زورٍ وبزناهِ مُفاخرٍ ومُبـَــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــاه

فعَجَبَاً لكَعْبَةِ ضَمْتْ حَجَرَاً يُشْبهُ الفَرّْجِ شِبْهاً لا يُضَـــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــاه

وأعْجَبُ مِنهِ حَجْيجٌ قدْ تنافَسوا قتلاً على قُبــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــلاه

طافوا حولهُ سَبْعَ مراتٍ وكُلٌ يُغنى على لَيـْـــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــلاه

عُراةٌ حُفاةٌ أو بثوبٍ لا تُخَاطُ بالخِيوطِ هُدُبـَـــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــاه

وعلى جَبَلِ عَرَفَاتٍ يَرجْمُونَ شيطاناً بالحِجارةِ والحُصَــــــــــــــــــــــــــــاه

جَاهِلون أنَ إبليسٌ هو روحاً لايَقْدرُ الرُُماةِ علـــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــــى أذاه

كشف الشيخ محمد سيد طنطاوي، شيخ الأزهر الشريف، عن أن أعداداً كبيرة من الأجانب، من جنسيات مختلفة، تشهر إسلامها في لجنة إشهار الإسلام، في الأزهر الشريف سنوياً، وأن قرابة 731 أجنبياً أشهروا إسلامهم هذا العام، وذلك حتى 5 نوفمبر 2005، وهم من 84 دولة مختلفة، بينهم 88 أمريكياً، ما يؤكد عدم القناعة بما يروجه بعض الغربيين عن أن الإسلام عدو للغرب، كما قال.

وأكد الدكتور عبد الله إمام، رئيس لجنة إشهار الإسلام بمشيخة الأزهر الشريف، أن هناك أكثر من مليون ومائتي ألف أجنبي، أشهروا إسلامهم خلال الأعوام العشرة الأخيرة، طبقاً لإحصائية أصدرها الأزهر الشريف مؤخرا، مشيرا إلى أن الغالبية العظمى من المسلمين الجدد، الذين أشهروا إسلامهم مؤخراً من أوروبا، وتحديدا أوروبا الشرقية، وتأتي الولايات المتحدة الأمريكية في المركز الثاني، ثم أمريكا الجنوبية، ودول شرق آسيا، ثم إفريقيا، كماقال.

وقد ألمح شيخ الأزهر إلى أن إسلام غالبية هؤلاء الأشخاص جرى عن اقتناع تام، وبعد قراءة القرآن الكريم، والتعرف على أحكام دينهم الجديد، وأحياناً بدون الاتصال بأي مسلم لمعرفة الإسلام، والاكتفاء بمعرفة الإسلام من الكتب ومن القرآن الكريم، مشيراً إلى حالة سيدة دنمركية عجوز، طلبت مقابلته لإشهار إسلامها، ورغبتها في الموت في دولة إسلامية، وتأكيدها أنها اقتنعت بالإسلام بعد قراءتها عنه عدة سنوات، ودون مساعدة من أحد.

وكان الشيخ عبد الله إمام، رئيس لجنة إشهار الإسلام، قد ذكر لجريدة "الأسرار" المصرية، أن أعداد الذين يشهرون إسلامهم قد قل عقب أحداث الحادي عشر من سبتمبر 2001، لكنه عاد وارتفع مرة أخرى بمعدلات أكبر من ذي قبل، خصوصاً في الأعوام الثلاثة الأخيرة، رغم أن الإسلام تأثر كثيراً بالحملات الشرسة، التي قادتها قوى غربية معادية، عقب أحداث الحادي عشر من أيلول (سبتمبر)، فصوّرت الإسلام على أنه دين يدعو إلى الإرهاب والقتل، وصورت المسلمين على أنهم شعوب همجية بربرية، يستحلون دماء غير المسلمين، بالإضافة إلى كونهم متخلفين عن ركب الحضارة، التي يريدون تدميرها.

وعن إجراءات إشهار الإسلام يقول الشيخ فرحات المنجي، عضو لجنة إشهار الإسلام بالأزهر، أنه يجب أن تتوافر عدة شروط فيمن يريد إشهار إسلامه، أولها أن يكون بالغاً وعاقلاً، وبإرادته غير مكره أو مجبر، فيأتي إلينا في المشيخة لينطق الشهادتين، ويستمع لتعاليم الدين الإسلامي، ويتم إعطاؤه كتب الشريعة ومصحفاً هدية، بعدها يعطى شهادة باعتناق الدين الإسلامي، مدوناً بها اسمه قبل الإسلام، والاسم الذي اختاره بعد الإسلام، ويوقع على تعهد بأنه بريء من أي دين آخر.
ويضيف أنه يتم إبلاغ الأمن بكل من يشهر إسلامه إذا تطلب الأمر ذلك، كأن يطلب حمايته من بطش أبناء ملته السابقة، التي خرج عنها، فتوفر أجهزة الأمن الحماية له إلى أن يطلب هو بنفسه رفع الحماية عنه.

وأكد أن الكثيرين يختارون مصر لإشهار إسلامهم في مشيخة الأزهر، على اعتبار أهمية دورها في الإسلام، مشيراً إلى أن معظم المسلمين الجدد يدرسون في الأزهر حتى يلموا بكل أركان الإسلام وشرائعه.

ومن أشهر النماذج التي أشهرت إسلامها في مشيخة الأزهر إحدى حفيدات هولاكو، القائد التتري الذي غزا بلاد الإسلام، قبل قرون، فقد جاءت إلى مصر بصحبة زوجها قادمة من منغوليا لتشهر إسلامها، وتطلق على نفسها اسم خديجة، تيمناً باسم زوجة الرسول محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم، بعد أن كان اسمها شاور.

وعن قصة اعتناقها الإسلام تقول إنها قرأت كثيراً عن الحضارة الإسلامية، خاصة بعدما أرادت أن تسجل تاريخ الحملات التترية في كتاب أطلقت عليه اسم "لماذا لم يحكم التتار العالم؟". وفي دراستها توقفت عند الحروب الإسلامية، ودرست كثيراً عن القادة المسلمين، وفتنت بشخصية الرسول محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم، وهو ما غير وجهة نظرها، أثناء القراءة، فوجدت نفسها تقرأ في الإسلام كالظامئ، الذي يريد أن ينهل من هذا الدين الجديد، وأخيراً وجدت نفسها تنطق الشهادتين وتعتنق الإسلام، وجاءت لمصر بصحبة زوجها وأشهرا معاً إسلامهما، على يد الشيخ فرحات المنجي، وعاشت في مصر قرابة العامين ثم عادت مرة أخرى إلى وطنها الأصلي، بعد أن مارست تعاليم الإسلام هي وزوجها، وتشبعت بها، وقررت أن تقود بنفسها حملة للتعريف بالإسلام.

وهناك قصة أخرى بطلتها امرأة بولونية اسمها بولتنا روش، وهي مسيحية كاثوليكية، تعرفت بأسرة مسلمة كانت تعيش معها في نفس الحي شرق وارسو، وقد تعرضت هذه الأسرة إلى معاملة عنصرية شديدة القسوة، ومن ثم تعاطفت معها بولتنا، وأخذت تقترب شيئاً فشيئاً من هذه الأسرة لتعرف لماذا يحاربهم الكاثوليك، ويصفونهم بأنهم همج وعبيد وبربر، لمجرد أنهم مسلمون، وكان رب هذه الأسرة المصرية المسلمة فناناً تشكيلياً يدعى حشمت، وكان على دراية واسعة بالإسلام وتعاليمه، فقام بدعوتها للإسلام، وبعد اقتناع شديد منها، أخذ منها وقتاً طويلاً، اعتنقت الإسلام، وأطلقت على نفسها اسم فاطمة، لكنها واجهت حملة شرسة من أسرتها ومن الكنيسة، حتى إنها حرمت من أطفالها الصغار، الذين اختطفوا، وأودعوا ملاجئ بأسماء كاثوليكية، بعدما أشهروا إسلامهم هم الآخرون.

وأمام تعسف الجميع ومحاربتهم لإسلامها قررت الهروب، والمجيء إلى مصر، وداخل مشيخة الأزهر قررت إشهار إسلامها، والحصول على شهادة باعتناق الإسلام. وبعدما قصت حكايتها تم تسليمها لأسرة الفنان التشكيلي، الذي هرب هو الآخر إلى مصر عائداً من بولندا، وتم وضعها تحت حراسة مشددة، خشية أن تطالها أيدي جماعة أطلقت على نفسها اسم "بولندا الحرة"، والتي تلقت منها هذه المرأة عدة تهديدات بالقتل والخطف، ما لم تعد إلى الكاثوليكية وتترك الإسلام.

وهناك سيدة يهودية تدعى مارجريت، كانت تحمل عداءً خفياً للإسلام، لكونها سمعت أنه يروج للإرهاب والقتل، وأن الشعوب التي تدين به شعوب همجية بربرية متخلفة، لكنها ذات يوم قررت أن تعرف هذا الدين على حقيقته، وأخذت تقترب بخوف وتوجس من كتب الإسلام، تقرأ منها شيئاً فشيئاً، وبدأت تقرأ بتمعن إلى أن قرأت سورة المسد، التي يتوعد الله فيها أبا لهب بالعذاب، وجلست مع نفسها تفكر في معنى هذه الآية، التي كان من الممكن أن تصبح مجرد كلام باطل إذا قام أبو لهب هذا بنطق الشهادتين، حتى من وراء قلبه، ليدحض هذا الدين، لكنه لم يفعل، وهو ما يؤكد أن هذا الكون يديره إله له قدرة عظيمة على تدبيره، ومن ثم توجهت مارجريت بعد ذلك إلى مشيخة الأزهر الشريف، وقامت بإشهار إسلامها، بعدها تلقت دروساً في تعاليم الإسلام، وقررت أن تنشر قصة إشهار إسلامها في صحف أوروبية، مهما كانت النتائج.
