Facts About Avian Influenza (Bird Flu) and Avian Influenza A (H5N1) Virus

Avian influenza in birds
Avian influenza is an infection caused by avian (bird) influenza (flu) viruses. These influenza viruses occur naturally among birds. Wild birds worldwide carry the viruses in their intestines, but usually do not get sick from them. However, avian influenza is very contagious among birds and can make some domesticated birds, including chickens, ducks, and turkeys, very sick and kill them.

Infected birds shed influenza virus in their saliva, nasal secretions, and feces. Susceptible birds become infected when they have contact with contaminated secretions or excretions or with surfaces that are contaminated with secretions or excretions from infected birds. Domesticated birds may become infected with avian influenza virus through direct contact with infected waterfowl or other infected poultry, or through contact with surfaces (such as dirt or cages) or materials (such as water or feed) that have been contaminated with the virus.
Infection with avian influenza viruses in domestic poultry causes two main forms of disease that are distinguished by low and high extremes of virulence. The “low pathogenic” form may go undetected and usually causes only mild symptoms (such as ruffled feathers and a drop in egg production). However, the highly pathogenic form spreads more rapidly through flocks of poultry. This form may cause disease that affects multiple internal organs and has a mortality rate that can reach 90-100% often within 48 hours.

Human infection with avian influenza viruses

There are many different subtypes of type A influenza viruses. These subtypes differ because of changes in certain proteins on the surface of the influenza A virus (hemagglutinin [HA] and neuraminidase [NA] proteins). There are 16 known HA subtypes and 9 known NA subtypes of influenza A viruses. Many different combinations of HA and NA proteins are possible. Each combination represents a different subtype. All known subtypes of influenza A viruses can be found in birds.
Usually, “avian influenza virus” refers to influenza A viruses found chiefly in birds, but infections with these viruses can occur in humans. The risk from avian influenza is generally low to most people, because the viruses do not usually infect humans. However, confirmed cases of human infection from several subtypes of avian influenza infection have been reported since 1997. Most cases of avian influenza infection in humans have resulted from contact with infected poultry (e.g., domesticated chicken, ducks, and turkeys) or surfaces contaminated with secretion/excretions from infected birds. The spread of avian influenza viruses from one ill person to another has been reported very rarely, and transmission has not been observed to continue beyond one person.

Bird flu cases confirmed in Egypt

CAIRO, Egypt (AP) -- A U.N. official on Friday said tests done on dead birds in Egypt had confirmed an outbreak of the deadly H5N1 strain of avian flu that has swept out of Southeast Asia into Europe, the Middle East and Africa. There have been no confirmed cases in humans.

Dr. Talib Elham of the Food and Agriculture Organization in Cairo said the disease had apparently moved north to Cairo in an infected turkey that was taken to market in the capital.

Other outbreaks were found in flocks kept in backyard gardens and rooftop coops in Giza, just across the Nile River from Cairo. Positive tests also were reported from birds in the southern Egyptian cities of Minya and Qena.

The Egyptian Cabinet was meeting Friday afternoon and expected to make a public announcement, according to health officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to make the information public. They said there had been between 18 and 20 positive test results so far.

EGYPT: Abused women reluctant to come forward

Source: IRIN

Despite the opening of the first safe-house for women in Cairo, few are choosing to leave their abusive marriages due to the social stigma and financial insecurity they would face.

Oum Mohammed was married when she was 16. "From the day I married him, he hit me over matters big and small," she says of her husband.

"He told me that all women should be beaten. I didn't protest because I was afraid he'd throw me and my children into the street," she adds. "I'd seen my father hit my mother, and in every house in the alley a man hits a woman."

Oum Mohammed's story is just one of 700 case studies that the Association for the Development and Enhancement of Women (ADEW), a local NGO, has collected over the past several years.

Hearing stories like these convinced ADEW that there was an urgent need for a shelter for women who are victims of violence.

According to the NGO, domestic abuse is common in Egypt. A 2001 survey conducted in low-income neighbourhoods found that 96 percent of women had been beaten at least once by their husbands.

Such violence is often condoned by society, or even by the victims, experts say.

A majority of the women surveyed in a government study, for example, said a husband had the right to beat his wife if she talked to him disrespectfully, talked to another man, spent too much money or refused her husband sex.

If a woman goes to the police station to report domestic abuse, the police adopt "the cultural perspective that the man has the right to do it", says ADEW officer Bahira El-Gohary.

Men convicted of domestic violence in Egypt face sentences ranging from monetary fines to three years in prison. According to Nihad al-Qumsan, head of the Egyptian Centre for Women's Rights, however, "most of the time, judges give low penalties".

Tariq Ramadan – Reformist or Islamist?

By A. Dankowitz

Egyptian journalist Adel Guindy published a three-part series of articles in which he sought to enlighten the Arab public about Tariq Ramadan, one of the most popular propagators of Islam in Europe. The series, which appeared in the Egyptian Coptic weekly Watani and on reformist websites, presented important parts of the book Frère Tariq ("Brother Tariq") by Caroline Fourest, a French sociologist and journalist who deals with secularism and religious extremism. In the book, which was published in 2004, Fourest examines Ramadan's sophisticated message, pointing out that he conveys one message to a Muslim audience and a different message to the larger public, and that sometimes he is even capable of addressing both audiences simultaneously and conveying a different message to each.

Brother Tariq… A Man of Many Faces

By Adel Guindy *

Tariq Ramadan, the same man who was denied residence status in France and had his US visa revoked, has suddenly become the subject of singular British reverence. Becoming a visiting lecturer at Oxford University’s St. Anthony college was surprising enough, but not as surprising as when, at the end of August 2005, the British Interior Minister invited him to join a task force of thirteen Muslim figures (religious leaders, politicians and academics). The objective of that task force is to identify possible means to dissuade young British Muslims from turning to extremism. Amazingly, one discovers that (according to ‘The Guardian’ in its edition of August 31), Tariq Ramadan has for some time been giving lectures to senior British police officers.

Hardly a few days after the Minister’s decision, Ramadan commented to the French magazine ‘Le Point’ about the British government’s decision to deny Sheikh Youssef al-Qaradawi entry to the U.K. to deliver a series of lectures in London: “If (al-Qaradawi) is denied entry, many of us (members of the task force) would be questioning the merit of pursuing a dialogue with the British government” (!!)

Prior to that, the Catholic University of Notre-Dame in the United States had invited Ramadan to join the faculty as a guest lecturer for the fall semester of 2004. However, the American administration, after some hesitation, revoked his visa in July of the same year ─ the reason stated being “endorsement of terrorist activities.”

In November 2003, Nicolas Sarkozy, the French Interior Minister, engaged Ramadan in a widely-watched live televised debate. When he was asked to comment on an article written by his brother (Hany Ramadan) that justifies stoning women as a punishment for adultery, Ramadan was only content to say that he “would ‘personally’ like to call for a temporary moratorium on the punishment.” Naturally, this comment was reason for the French minister to vehemently remind him that we live in the 21st century.

Who exactly is this controversial man, a Swiss high school teacher of Egyptian origin, who happens to be one of the most popular Islamic predicators in Europe? Is he a reformer or a fundamentalist? Does he foster open dialogue and the integration of Muslim minorities into the Western societies, or further confrontation and alienation? Does he stand with, or against, terrorism?

Egypt tests chickens after mysterious deaths

CAIRO (AFP) - Officials in Egypt's southern governorate of Qena began testing chickens for avian flu after the mysterious deaths of some 130 of them in one village, an AFP correspondent reported

The death of the birds at a number of homes in Ezzab al-Masri prompted residents to alert officials, fearing the outbreak of a disease, the correspondent said.

Veterinary doctors later took samples from the dead poultry for testing.
Egypt says it has not detected any cases of bird flu in the country since officials tightened controls at ports of entry and set up observation posts along its borders and waters to collect samples on migratory birds.
The authorities have also called off the bird-hunting season in response to the global bird flu scare and banned imports of live birds and poultry products.
Qena is the governorate in which the popular tourist areas of Luxor and Thebes are located.

Calls for Cartoon Protest Arrests in UK.

LONDON -- British police were on Monday examining footage of London protests against Prophet Mohammed cartoons that saw people chanting threatening slogans. Government ministers were among those urging police action after demonstrators waved placards glorifying the July 7 bombings and calling for those who insulted Islam to be killed. British Home Secretary Charles Clarke told parliament that police were conducting a "rigorous investigation" into the February 3 demonstration to see if offenses had been committed. Clarke acknowledged the deep offense that was caused to Muslims by the cartoons, which included an image of the Prophet Mohammed wearing a bomb-shaped turban. However, violence, such as that directed at European embassies in recent days, could not be justified, he said. The government would support any action that police decided to take against protestors, he said. No arrests were made at the February 3 demonstration outside the Danish Embassy in London - over cartoons first published in a Danish newspaper - but police said that they were examining video and photographic evidence. "We are determined that this investigation will be as swift, efficient and thorough as possible, as is reasonable for the crimes committed," Scotland Yard said. Some protestors waved placards with slogans such as "Behead those who insult Islam" and chanted "7/7 is on the way", a reference to the July 7, 2005 suicide bombings in the British capital that killed 52 people. Conservative Shadow Home Secretary David Davis said "direct incitements to violence" had taken place that "emphatically crossed the line" of what was acceptable, civilized behavior. Several Muslim leaders also condemned the protestors, who they said did not represent the majority of British Muslims. A man who dressed as a suicide bomber for the demonstration apologized for his behavior, which he acknowledged had deeply offended the families of the July 7 victims. Omar Khayam, 22, said that he had dressed that way to make the point that the right to free speech did not include the right to offend. "But by me dressing the way I did, I did just that, exactly the same as the Danish newspaper, if not worse," he said in a statement.

The Islamization of Europe

On Friday 20th May 2005 a crowd of some 300 Muslims burned a wooden cross outside the American embassy in London. This was part of a protest against the rumored desecration of a Qur’an by American soldiers in Guantanamo Bay, during which British and American flags were also burned. Perhaps the most remarkable aspect of this event was that it was not deemed to be newsworthy, receiving little attention in the national press.

The whole scenario is reminiscent of what happens in so many Muslim-majority countries: a rumor of an insult to Islam, a violent and blasphemous anti-Christian reaction, police watching idly, and a complete lack of public interest let alone outrage. It could have been Pakistan, Egypt, Indonesia or Northern Nigeria. But it was the UK.

“Don’t Point to the Speck in Your Brother’s Eye Until You Remove the Log from Your Own Eye”

(Birmingham, UK) - The Coalition for the Defense of Human Rights in Europe calls for soberness and humility in response to the recent violent protests by radical Islamists.

Although sympathetic to the religious feelings of Muslims to preserve the dignity of their religious figures and symbols, we are deeply concerned over the escalating violent nature of the events as they have unfolded during the past two weeks.

As ethnic and religious minorities from Islamic countries could attest, we understand what it is like to suffer the degradation of one’s religious values. Let us not ignore the reality under which non-Muslims live across the Muslim world.

Freedom of religion does not exist in Saudi Arabia. It is severely limited in countries such as Egypt. Three weeks ago a mob of angry Muslims attacked a church in a village near Luxor, in Upper Egypt, resulting in the death of two innocent people, including a five years old child, with scores of wounded and terrorized. Where were Muslim organizations calling for the defense of these vulnerable people? In Pakistan, one can be put to death for being convicted of Blasphemy. Why are Christian churches attacked with stones in Beirut, Lebanon and bombed in Kirkuk, Iraq for a small Danish newspaper’s actions? Do feelings of insult require the blood of a Catholic priest, Fr. Andrea Santoro, murdered as he prayed in his church in Trabzon, Turkey?

The fact is, freedom of expression in religious matters in the Islamic world is invariably one-way: Public attacks (often virulent) on faiths other than Islam are abundant, without even the right of response. Displayed at the Cairo Book Fair held in January, numerous titles bashing Christianity and Judaism were readily available. Inflammatory books are abundant throughout the Islamic world. More than engendering hurt sensibilities they are invitations to bigotry, hatred and violence against non-Muslims.

Despotic rulers, sensational media and extremists have exploited the cartoon saga throughout the Islamic world in order to falsely frame the issue as a ‘conspiracy’ against Islam, or an expression of Islamophobia. This only deepens the gulf between Muslims and the West. We implore the millions of moderate and reasonable Muslims not to be exploited in such a way.

We call upon those who think that the excesses of liberty are such an affront to Islamic religious sensibilities that they deserve the most virulent protest to first look into their own eyes and consider the terrible human suffering that is inflicted upon non-Muslims by the curtailment of their liberties and dignity. At that point the dialogue may begin.

ANTI-CHRISTIAN AND ANTI-SEMITIC BOOKS ON DISPLAY AT CAIRO INTERNATIONAL BOOK FAIR: LAWSUIT PENDING

CAIRO, EGYPT (ANS) -- A number of anti-Semitic and anti-Christian publications were on display at the recent Cairo International Book Fair. Sample images of these books are still displayed at www.baladynet.net, an Islamic news site apparently hosted by an American Internet Service provider.

According to the
Free Copts blog these publications are also sold throughout Egypt.

Publications on display included “It is not holy,” (referring to the Holy Bible) and “Why they broke the Cross,” (attacking Christian beliefs).

Other titles were the role of the crusade church in the fall of Islamic Caliphate, an encouragement to convert to Islam to enjoy security, a publication titled “Christians of Egypt; how many and who are they?” This was described by the blog writer as a “hateful publication inciting Muslims against the Copts, Egypt’s indigenous people.”

Another publication was called, “Who killed the dog?” This, the blog writer commented, referred to “the murder of Egyptian intellectual Farag Foda (www.meforum.org/article/395), a free-thinking Muslim intellectual who was killed because of his anti- fanatic attitude. This book is considered a direct incitement to kill other Egyptian intellectuals who take the same position.”

Another book was called “Islamic Enlightment,” described by the blog writer as “a hate- filled periodical that incites hatred against Jews, Christians and non-Muslims in general. Another publication was named “O ye filthy gypsies,” described by the blogger as “A message to the Diaspora Christians.”

The blog writer commented, “Mosque imams and extremists alike are allowed to publicly insult Jews, Christians, the Bible, the Cross, and Christianity. They have done this, not just through cartoons in the press, but also through the wide use of media such as TV channels, radio stations, and newspapers all over the Arab and Muslim world.”

However, there is, according to the blog writer who spoke by e-mail on condition of anonymity, a lawsuit pending in Egypt about the material.

He said that Naguib Gibrael, a Coptic attorney who visited the Cairo International Book Fair on Jan. 30 2006, saw these books on display.

In an e-mail the blogger said, “Article 98/1 of the Egyptian penal code forbids slander against ‘heavenly religions.’ Usually this law is used against Copts to stop them from criticizing Islam. In reality I have not seen a single Muslim who was prosecuted for defaming Christianity and Judaism. But in this case, the Coptic lawyer has taken the case before the Egyptian attorney General informing him of the books that are considered in violation of the Egyptian law.”

WHO IS BEHIND THE MATERIAL?

The book publisher is apparently, according to the blog writer, “Mr. Ahmed,” who the blog entry commented, “prefers the name Abu Islam Ahmed (and with many like him) have made it their mission in life to publicly attack the Jewish and Christian faiths, Jews and Copts and Christians in general. They are willing to use all and every method to achieve what they want. Fabrications, lies, and double standards are their usual methods. They are the people who are now crying and screaming that Islam has been insulted by few cartoons published in Denmark.”

Ahmed, the blog writer stated, also runs the “ Islamic Enlightment Center” (www.manalaa.net:8888/islamic_academy.wmv).

According to the Free Copts blog, Ahmed’s center is “a location where Muslim youth receive an intensive dose of anti-Christian and anti-Semitic brain washing and incitement.”

A Dec. 8 article on the International Freedom of Expression (IFEX) website (www.ifex.org/en/content/view/full/70981) stated that Ahmed was arrested in Cairo on Dec. 5 2005 by Cairo by members of the Amn-El-Dawla state security agency.

Reporters without Borders (RWB), the IFEX article stated, expressed concern about Ahmed’s detention, saying he was the second website or blog editor to be arrested since late Oct. They called for his immediate release.

Ahmed was a former editor of “Al-Shaab,” an opposition newspaper that was closed down

“Website journalists and bloggers should enjoy the same legal protection and respect as journalists working for traditional media,” IFEX reported RWB said. “The decision to arrest a journalist or blogger is serious and should only be taken in the course of transparent judicial proceedings, which was not the case with the two arrests of website and blog editors of the past six weeks.”

According to IFEX, in addition to editing Balady Net, Ahmed has also written a number of books and is a member of the Union of Egyptian Journalists. He was arrested while at the Center for Islamic Enlightenment. Before going to his office, IFEX reported that state security agents searched his home, confiscating notes, books and computer disks.

However, the blog author said by e-mail that Ahmed only remained in custody for a few days, was released and that no action has been taken against him.

There was no immediate response to an e-mail sent to Ahmed requesting comment.Balady Net is registered to Ahmed Islam and appears to be hosted by the Dallas-based Planet.com. An e-mail to Planet.com requesting comment was answered with an automatically generated response

The blog writer asked, “Will (Egyptian) President Mubarak who warned the West against the ‘Prophet Muhammad Cartoon,’ and the Egyptian government, do something to stop the ongoing incitement and offenses against Christians in Jews in the Egyptian media and bring to trial those who are promoting hatred? Or (are) Muslims superior to everybody and it's a fair game to attack Christians and Jews?”

He added by e-mail that Ahmed “is not the only case, but it's just an example of how Muslims get away with slander of other faiths and consider this freedom of speech at the same time that anyone who dares to utter a word against Islam or Muhammad is liable for imprisonment.”

To James Zogby And His Pro-Saudi Gang: We Are Not Arab-Americans

James Zogby, the founder and president of the Arab American Institute (AAI), is a pro Saudi puppet who falsely claims to represent Middle Eastern Americans

Editor's note: The Arab American Institute (AAI) continues its policy of identifying Assyrian ,- Coptic -and Maronite Americans as "Arabs", despite a previous attempt to stop this practice. On October 10, 2001 a letter (AINA 10-27-2001) was sent to the AAI by a coalition of nine Assyrian and Maronite organizations; the letter asked AAI to stop identifying Assyrians and Maronites as Arabs, but AAI has continued to do so.

We Are Not Arab-Americans
By:Pierre A. Maroun
(AINA) Ever so often, certain partisan groups who claim to be grassroots and non-profit organizations use the freedom of expression in the United States to attack the conduct of the other active groups. In particular, The Arab American Institution (AAI), headed by Mr. James Zogby, has repeatedly alleged that measures taken by the Bush Administration to combat terrorism have infringed on the rights of the Arab and Muslim communities in the USA.
While it is the right of every American citizen to speak his/her mind, it is our responsibility to correct the blatant misrepresentation of our communities. We believe that the AAI's statements and actions have dual fallacies.
The first is the AAI's portrayal of being the representatives of the whole Middle Eastern community in America. Secondly, its allegations of US abuse of Arabs and Muslims, which are false, unethical, and politically motivated.
Thus far, Mr. Zogby's has failed to provide any tangible evidence of its claims and allegations. Therefore, it is only fair to conclude that his objections to the US Administration's war on terrorism and to the Patriot Act are not due to his concern about Arab-American rights and civil liberties, but rather for his political ideology and financial means.
Political Ideology
Mr. Zogby adamantly opposed the Patriot Act and its associated necessary security measures, which the US Congress overwhelmingly passed to prevent another attack on our soil similar to September 11, on the grounds that such laws discriminate against Arab-Americans and Muslims and harm their civil liberties.
For example, on January 6, 2006, Mr. Zogby asked the U.S. government to end its Security Entry/Exit Registration System2 (NSEERS) claiming that Arabs and Muslims paid dearly for such measures."3
While these allegations are very serious ones, he failed to have the courtesy to provide a single proof. Furthermore, Mr. Zogby blindly opposed the US war on terrorism and the invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan claiming that these wars cannot be justified, despite the fact that 25 million, Iraqis and 18 million, Afghanis have been freed from the tyrant regimes of Saddam Hussein and the Mullahs of the Taliban's.
It seems that, as a committed democrat and as a member of the American Civil Liberty Union (ALCU), Mr. Zogby is obliged to fight the Republican Bush Administration regardless of what's at stake if the Administration lost its war on terrorism.
His objection is ridiculously vicious stretching from election campaigning to spreading anti Bush propaganda. For example, in his article: Why Arab-Americans should vote for John Kerry, published in the Daily Star on October 27, 2004, Mr. Zogby said: I'm a Democrat" and "[t]his November, I will vote for John Kerry for President of the United States. I will do so, confident that it is the right thing to do for my country and my community."1
Financial Gain
On March 14, 2005, Mr. Jim Zogby sent a letter to Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. In it, he complained about the Department of State recognizing the Middle Easter-American communities as such instead of Arabs, for there are some organizations which do not support his political and ideological views. He referred to these organizations as "exiled groups." While he did not elaborate on their status, we find it necessary to explain that these groups are exiled simply because they want freedom and are civil right activists who refuse to live under the oppressive and tyrant regimes in the Middle East. These are the same undemocratic regimes, which back and finance the AAI. Mr. Zogby went even further to complain about the Director of Public Diplomacy for Middle Eastern and MEPI Affairs at USAID the Honorable Walid Maalouf asking him "not to label the Arab Community" each according to his/her ethnicity. What Mr. Zogby is seeking here is nothing but a continuation of the annihilation of these Middle Eastern minority groups who suffered death and destructions at the hand of the tyrant leaders of the Arab community which Mr. Zogby claims to represent.
Mr. Zogby's own poll contradicts his own allegations and proved that Mr. Maalouf's conduct is proper and true. In his article, Good news in S. Arabia and Lebanon, published January 3, 2006, you affirmed that in the second half of 2005, Zogby International poll, which covered six Arab countries, found that "[s]ignificant changes are taking place in public opinion, especially in Saudi Arabia and Lebanon, which warrant special attention." Mr. Zogby wrote:
"One final area where a dramatic change occurred in Saudi opinion was in how Saudis identified themselves. In 2002, they indicated a preference to self- identify as "being Arab". Today, they prefer describing themselves as "Saudi". All this points to a growing sense of self-confidence, satisfaction and commitment to their country." He added: "The best news for Lebanon, however, is the degree to which the Lebanese, from all groups, identify with the country -- higher than in any other Arab country. When asked to describe their principal identifier, more than 70 per cent say "being Lebanese" -- double the number in 2002."
We should have the courtesy to respect the wish of the people to label themselves as they desire and not as he deems fit. Furthermore, we urge him to take an advice of his own polls. In addition, the AAI mission statement claims that "AAI is a membership organization based in Washington, DC that represents the policy and community interests of Arab Americans throughout the United States…" It will be of great help for the State Department to make a decision regarding his claim had Mr. Zogby defined Arabism. However, a link on his website does the work for him, which also contradicts Mr. Zogby's claims. In his article, Arab Identity: E Pluribus Unum, scholar Halim Barakat explains:
The prevailing view is that only a small minority of the citizens of Arab countries does not speak Arabic as their mother tongue and lack a sense of being Arab; this minority category includes the Kurds, Berbers, Armenians, and the ethnolinguistic groups of southern Sudan. Fewer still are those who speak Arabic as their mother tongue without sharing with the majority a sense of nationhood, a trend that may exist among the Maronites of Lebanon in times of conflict. Most other minority groups, such as the Orthodox Christians, Shi'ites, Alawites, and Druze, consider themselves Arabs with some qualifications and reservations….Yet, most Arabists, especially today in response to the emergence of Islamic fundamentalism, continue to assert the complementarity, if not the synonymity, of Islam and Arabism [sic].5
Accordingly, we believe that Mr. Zogby et. al. should respect the rich diversity of Middle Eastern-American communities by referring to them as such, unless he is referring specifically to the Arab-American small community, which represent only 22% of the Middle Eastern-American communities. In such case, he should be specific and clear.
Conclusion
The AAI claims to be a "non-profit organization committed to the civic and political empowerment of Americans of Arab descent." Such claim is unfounded. The AAI is not a grassroots organization fighting for the public interest as Mr. Zogby claims, but rather a lobbying group fighting for interest groups, i.e. Arab regimes, which fund Mr. Zogby's activities, in coordination with the Democratic Party and the ACLU. Thus, Zogby is misleading the US and the Middle Eastern communities by feeding the public false information and biased studies.

The hostile attitude of the Egyptian Security System against the Coptic Bishopric of Luxor

The Bishopric of Luxor, Esna & Armant is located about 350 miles south of Cairo. It is taken here as an example of the abuse that befalls the Copts on the hands of the Egyptian security and police systems.

The Bishopric of Luxor, Esna and Armant contains many churches. The Bishopric includes seven of these churches that were open prior to 1947. In that year H.G. the late Bishop Basilios, once the Bishop of Luxor, Esna & Aswan, departed. This was in the reign of H.H. the late Pope Yusab, the 115th Patriarch of the Alexandrian See of Saint Mark. Before the 1952 revolution, these seven churches were open for regular prayer. However, they were shut down by the Egyptian police during the bishopric of H.G. Bishop Amonios under the pretext of illegality, in spite of the fact that all seven churches did have legal papers since before the 1952 revolution. All legal papers were in the hands of the bishops who departed before the revolution, as well as with Andrawes Pasha who also departed before the revolution. The Luxor, Esna & Armant Bishopric has been appealing in vain to the Egyptian government for the reopening of these seven churches.

Examples of the problems that face Christian worship places in the Bishopric of Luxor, Esna & Armant:
1. The Church of the Virgin Saint Mary in El Bayadeya:
This church is very old, and elders still remember that H.G. the late Bishop Basilios celebrated liturgy in it. This church used to serve the city of El Bayadeya, as well as the towns of El Hagger, Ezbet Mina, Rawag, El Gebeyl, and El Boghdady. The church was shut down in 1986, days before the feast of the Holy Resurrection (Easter). The hall that belongs to the church was set to fire in 1989.
2. The Church of Archangel Michael in El Akalta:
This church used to serve the Christians of the towns of El Akalta, El Gezira, El Karna, El Ezba, and Nag' El Gesr. The church was shut down on the day of the Nativity Feast (Christmas) in 1995. This church is mentioned in the historical records of the History of the Coptic Church by Iris Habib El Masry, Volume 6.
3. The Church of the Virgin Saint Mary in Asfon, Esna:
This church used to serve about 800 families, and the closest church to it is that of the monastery of Saint Mettaos El Fakhoury. The church was shut down in the order of president Anwar El Sadat, president of the republic, in 1981.
4. The Church of the Tombs of Saint Georges' Monastery in El Rozaykat, Armant:
A court order has been issued to reopen the church, but the Egyptian Security still refuses to abide by that order.
5. The Church of Saint Dolaggy and her Children in Esna:
This church dates back to the fourth century, and is an endangered monument that some fanatics would like to see destroyed.
6. The Monastery of the Martyrs in Esna:
The walls of the Monastery are causing a problem to the Egyptian Security (!!!) The monks of the monastery still don't quite grasp what angers the Egyptian government in the walls of a peaceful monastery!
7. The Monastery of Saint Theodoros the Fighter west of Luxor:
This Monastery is a nuns' monastery whose walls were destroyed by rain and floodings. The Egyptian Security and the Egyptian Police are banning the reconstruction of the walls and are even preventing fresh water from reaching the monastery.
8. The Monastery of Saint Pachomios near Luxor:
A court decree was issued, which allows the monastery to build a gate for protection. Yet, the Egyptian Police objected and prevented the monastery from having a gate for "security reasons"!!!

After exposing these scandals that we brought to your attention as examples for what faces the Copts in Egypt, we find ourselves unable to carry on writing, for what is happening is dazzling! The wounds of Christians of yet another village in Luxor, El Udaysat, are still healing after the January 19th 2006 massacre they were subject to by the hands of Mulims and Egyptian security forces for having tried to reopen the closed church in their village. Two Copts were murdered in these incidents where, as usual, the Egyptian police sided with the Muslims in attacking, beating, and killing the Copts.

Muslim Cleric Found Guilty

If England is fighting terrorism, why on earth is it harboring radical imams and Islamic so called intellectuals who call for Jihad and promote hatred and racism on Al Jazeera and other Arabic TV stations?

Muslim Cleric Found Guilty.

Muslim cleric Abu Hamza al-Masri was found guilty by a British court for inciting murder and promoting racial hate. He is to serve seven years in prison. The infamous cleric was the imam of a mosque in north London. He promoted radical ideas against Jews, Christians, and the West in general.
Recently, many TV stations showed the imam, waving the stumps of his arms( both his forearms were amputated as a result of an accident in Afghanistan) and shouting at his audience, urging them to have no sympathy for the enemies of Islam but to kill them without mercy.
Al Masri (the name means The Egyptian, in Arabic) has moved to Britian few years ago, and married a British woman. His seremons at the mosque used to be well attended by Moslems, including a good number of impressable young people.

Passing sentence at the Old Bailey, Mr Justice Hughes told Abu Hamza"No one can say now what damage your words may have caused - no one can say whether any of your audiences, present or wider, acted on your words". The judge also said that"the cleric has helped persuade his followers that they had a "moral and religious duty to kill."

It is worth noting that US authorities are seeking the cleric's extradition for terror-related. matters. However, it seems that he cannot be extradited until he has finished serving his jail sentence in Britain.

Qaradawi's Jackass Jihad

By: Andrew G. Bostom

The [Muslim] nation [of Muhammad] must rage in anger. It is told that Imam Al-Shafi’ [d. 820, founder of the Shafi’ite school of Islamic jurisprudence] said: ‘Whoever was angered and did not rage is a jackass.’ We are not a nation of jackasses. We are not jackasses for riding, but lions that roar. We are lions that zealously protect their dens, and avenge affronts to their sanctities. We are not a nation of jackasses. We are a nation that should rage for the sake of Allah, His Prophet, and His book. We are the nation of Muhammad, and we must never accept the degradation of our religion.
Yusuf al-Qaradawi, Qatar, February 3, 2006

John Esposito, Georgetown University Professor and doyen of American apologists for jihadism, has repeatedly identified Sheikh Yusuf al-Qaradawi as one of the most influential contemporary Muslim thinkers. Qaradawi, “spiritual” leader of the Muslim Brotherhood, and head of the European Fatwa Council, reaches an enormous audience during his regular appearances on Al- Jazeera television. During a January 9, 1998 interview, Qaradawi observed that Islamic law divided the “People of the Book”—Jews and Christians—into three categories: non-Muslims in the lands of war (“Dar al Harb”); non-Muslims in lands of temporary truce; and non-Muslims under the jurisdiction of Islamic law, i.e., the dhimmis. Qaradawi thus summarized concisely the jihad war theory formulated in the 8th and 9th centuries, which continues, through the present, to regulate the relationships between Muslims and non-Muslims.

During many subsequent pronouncements—especially those in the Arabic media—including formal sermons, or interviews, Qaradawi has elaborated both the targets and allowable “tactics” for those contemporary Muslims whom he encourages to wage jihad. Jews, and Americans or their allies, figure prominently in these statements. For example, at the July 2003 meeting (in Stockholm) of the European Council for Fatwa and Research (which he heads), Qaradawi emphasized the orthodox Islamic basis for martyrdom operations to be directed against all Israeli citizens, whom he further described as classic harbis, licit targets in the Dar al Harb:

Those who oppose martyrdom operations and claim that they are suicide are making a great mistake. the one who carries out a martyrdom operation does not think of himself. He sacrifices himself for the sake of a higher goal, for which all sacrifices become meaningless. He sells himself to Allah in order to buy Paradise in exchange. Allah said: ‘Allah has bought from the believers their souls and their properties for they shall inherit Paradise… the one who carries out a martyrdom operation has a clear goal, and that is to please Allah

It has been determined by Islamic law that the blood and property of people of Dar Al-Harb [the Domain of Disbelief where the battle for the domination of Islam should be waged] is not protected. Because they fight against and are hostile towards the Muslims, they annulled the protection of his blood and his property… in modern war, all of society, with all its classes and ethnic groups, is mobilized to participate in the war, to aid its continuation, and to provide it with the material and human fuel required for it to assure the victory of the state fighting its enemies. Every citizen in society must take upon himself a role in the effort to provide for the battle. The entire domestic front, including professionals, laborers, and industrialists, stands behind the fighting army, even if it does not bear arms. Therefore the experts say that the Zionist entity, in truth, is one army. [emphasis added]

Followers of Judaism and Christianity Are Unbelievers

The meaning of "the unbelievers" in God's words [in the Qur'an]: "The unbelievers who keep others from the path of God" - all the unbelievers, such as the Quraysh polytheists [of Mecca], the hypocrites [i.e., the false Muslims in Medina], and the People of the Book [mainly Jews and Christians].

Arabic language: Grade 11, (2002) p. 79

What is meant here by "who will lose most through their labors" (Qur'an, Surat Al-Kahf, 103) [This] includes the polytheists, the Jews, the Christians and others who believe that their unbelief and error are correct and right.

...Guide us in the straight path, the path of those whom you have favored, not of those who have incurred your wrath, nor of those who have gone astray.
Meanings of Expressions...Those who have gone astray: the infidels [kafirin]

Islamic Religious Education, Grade 1, Part 1, (2002) p. 1

Qur'an commentators throughout the ages have generally agreed that the Jews were indicated by the phrase "those who have incurred your wrath" in this Qur'anic verse, while Christians were indicated by the phrase "those who have gone astray". The text here avoids such explanations and uses the general term "infidels".

Muslims Should Not Be Like Jews and Christians

It is time that the believers' hearts be humble when [they hear] the mention of God and the Qur'an He revealed to the heart of their own Messenger. It is time as well for them not to be like those who were given the book before them, as they have been immersed in lust and pleasures, their hearts have become rough ... and they do not differentiate between what is prohibited and what is permitted. Many of them have deviated from God's commandments and have left all virtuous deeds.

The Vices of Judaism and Christianity

Umm Habibah and Umm Salmah [two of the Prophet's wives] mentioned a church they had seen in Ethiopia in which there were images. They mentioned that to the Prophet.... He said: "Those people, if there is a good man amongst them who dies, they build a place of worship upon his grave and put there such images. Those are the worst creatures in God's eyes on the Day of Resurrection."
...Because the Christians worship the prophets' graves, out of reverence for their importance, pray in their direction and make idols - God has cursed them and has forbidden the Muslims to do such things.

Selected Prophetic Sayings [Ahadith], Grade 11 (2002) pp. 31-32

...All the infidels, and among them those who have attributed a son to God... These are the Jews and the Christians and some Arabian polytheists. God said [in the Qur'an]: "The Jews say Ezra is the son of God, while the Christians say the Messiah is the son of God."
